Terrific Printer - Great Value for the Money

Bought this to replace my 20-year-old HP printer. Works beautifully. It does duplex printing and has a manual sheet-feeder for single-sheet printing. It also has a feeder for continuous copying/scanning (not duplex). It has a manual sheet feeder for single-sheet printing and and a flatbed for single-sheet copying/scanning. Some criticized the printer for the limited number of pages printed from the toner. The manual indicates that the supplied toner is a “starter” toner. I replaced it with a compatible TN760 toner (2 for ~$29.00). Note: This printer does not fax. The next, higher-priced model does.

    Super easy setup

This is a great printer/scanner/copier. It’s fast, trouble free, no issues. The best feature is its super easy setup. I connected the printer to my WiFi network (just choose your network from the list displayed on the printers LCD display and then enter your WiFi password). Then I connected the wireless printer to my Mac desktop (just choose the Brother printer when you add a new printer, it will find it for you). Then I connected the printer to my Windows Desktop computer the same way, very easy. It will find it). Then I downloaded the Brother app to two iPhones and an iPad and did a simple setup on each. Now I can do really fast printing from my Mac, my Windows machine, my iPhones, and my iPad. Honestly, I was anticipating having all kinds of issues during setup, because that’s just usually how it is, but Brother really must have a top notch technology crew designing software on this printer because the setup was just so straight forward and easy.

Efficient and Reliable - A Solid Choice for Small Offices

I recently purchased the Brother DCP-L2640DW for my home office, and it has been a productive addition to my workspace. The compact design is perfect for small areas, yet it doesn’t compromise on functionality. Pros: The print speed is impressive, with up to 36 pages per minute, making quick work of even the largest documents1. Duplex printing is a breeze, which helps save on paper costs and is better for the environment2. The 250-sheet paper tray is ample for my needs, and I appreciate the 50-page auto document feeder for scanning multiple pages at once1. Wireless connectivity options are robust, offering both Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi, which means I can print from multiple devices with ease1. Cons: While the print quality is generally excellent, I’ve noticed that it can be a bit light on very fine details. The initial setup was a bit more involved than I expected, but once configured, it has worked flawlessly.

    A nice printer

While I'm spoiled by the pictographic touchscreen on my Brother MFC–L3770CDW which this printer doesn't have, this printer is nevertheless a very nice unit. Its output is beautiful, as output from a black-and-white printer goes – the blacks are pure and vivid, which they aren't always on my 3770, and it's not a great noisemaker like some printers. The one issue I had in setup was that my Mac seemed to have an outdated driver on it or something that it tried to use to communicate with the printer, causing it to sometimes take 10 or 15 or 20 minutes for the printer to print, and to sometimes not print at all. When I went into the Printers and Scanners pane on the computer, it interestingly showed this machine as a fax but not as a printer. So I started by deleting this machine from the Printers and Scanners pane and adding it back in. This caused the printer to show up as a printer, but I noticed when I did this that the computer did not choose AirPrint as the driver like it had the 3770, but chose some other generic driver...and the print delay/failure issue persisted. So finally I deleted all the devices from the Printers and Scanners pane and added this one back in again, whereupon the Mac did choose Secure AirPrint as the driver and all printing problems were resolved. When connected to wifi, the printer's wifi button lights up a steady green, which is great for letting you know the printer is successfully connected to the network but less great if you plan to sleep in the same room as the printer. My solution for this is to go into the printer's menu and go Network -> WLAN (wi-fi) -> WLAN Enable (I believe it's called) and set that to Off for the night, which causes the green light to turn off, and then to go through the process again and re-enable the WLAN in the morning. This allows me to turn off the green light for sleeping without having to set up the network connection all over again in the morning (entering the password for the network is a bit of a pain on this machine as it doesn't have any form of alphanumeric keypad, so you have to just use the plus and minus buttons on the front to go through numbers, symbols, and the alphabet in sequence until you get to each character you want to enter, which is a bit arduous and time-consuming, so you really don't want to do it any more often than is absolutely necessary). Once it's all set up, however, it's quite the nice printer and if you're in the market for a black-and-white printer, I can recommend this one. Update: I've stopped disabling the wifi to turn off the green light as I've found that, once re-enabled, the connection can behave badly as described above, with way-too-long print times and so forth; nowadays I choose the much less elegant but more effective and less troublesome option of putting something black (e.g., a sock) over the green light at night so the connection will not be broken, which in turn has proven effective in keeping the printer printing as one expects it to. A more elegant solution that would serve the same purpose might be to find a little black plastic cap for...something...that just covers the green-lit wifi button. But you get the idea: your objective is to block the light at night without interrupting the wifi connection so problems don't arise from the latter scenario. Enjoy!

    very good printer

This is a very good printer. I've had the Hl 2340 and Hl2370 and you just can't kill these printers. I bought the HL-L2460DW because it had the scan and copy feature plus I can connect a lot of my devices via wireless. I had a Cannon copier scanner printer combo and I never could get the thing to work right and I had to constantly refill the ink tanks. About 99.9% of the things I print and black and white and this 2460 does everything without missing a beat plus Amazon's price is great. You can't go wrong with this fine machine.

    ARGH!!!!!

I have used Brother printers for many years... like 35 years. I have always loved Brother printers. But this one is frustrating, and I find the situation with Brother support (which is unfailingly friendly and eager to help) frustrating. 1. This has no power button. You can't turn it off. Yes, there's a button, but holding it down doesn't get the printer to shut off. You need to UNPLUG this thing to get it to reset. 2. And you need it to reset because it comes set up with IP6 which breaks Cloud Print, and once you disable the IP6, you still need to reset the printer. And you cannot do that without UNPLUGGING IT. Also, it hangs when I'm scanning something, and the only fix for that it unplugging. And I tried double-sided copies and got into some kind of state where it scanned forever and never printed anything for the copies -- again, UNPLUG IT. If you're going to make a printer with crappy firmware, make it easy to power-cycle. 3. Brother has a download for a firmware installer for this printer. But you can update the firmware from it's internal webserver. Why are they spending time and effort on a Mac configurer and a PC configurer when the thing has a web interface? And then when I update the firmware in the web interface, it doesn't update saying the version on the printer is the most modern. When the PC download says there's a more modern one. 4. Drivers are all x86. The raspberry PI is the 3rd most popular computer in the world, and COMPLETELY unsupported by Brother. Brother techs kept telling me to use the x86 drivers for debian/ubuntu on the little ARM Raspberry PI. 5. The documentation is ABSURD. The manual for this covers all these printers (I am not making this up) "DCP‑L2510D / DCP‑L2530DW / DCP‑L2537DW / DCP‑L2550DN / MFC‑L2710DN / MFC‑L2710DW / MFC‑L2730DW / MFC‑L2750DW" -- these have different feature sets and different DISPLAYS. It's a nightmare. BROTHER: Get new management for your human-factors team. Do human-interface studies to see what doesn't make sense. You'll find a LOT of this stuff could be easily made intuitive and is the OPPOSITE. Stop multiplexing your documentation with 8 models on one sheet. Move to a pure web interface for setup so it's portable and easier to support. Compile the same CUPS driver you make available in TWO (and sometimes more) x86 formats for the Raspberry PI. It's a huge part of the education market -- (14 MILLION sold). This is a no-brainer. Better yet, release a bare-bones open-source driver which could easily be updated to support each new printer. We really do NOT WANT your complex drivers or to go to your support site. We just want to push postscript to your printer. How hard is that!?!? The entire Linux community would prefer that, x86 included. Why can't there be one generic postscript driver for all Brother printers which support Postscript? And on all your printers (this one doesn't do it) when I hit scan, I want a serialized scan sent to a set to a share or an FTP site. If I want to archive some checks, I should be able to put them on the scanner, hit scan, and be done. You have forced me on this model to set up a windows box running your receiver software. ABSURD. The MFC-1440N was cumbersome, but this is unusable. Please fix this in a new firmware revision. I absolutely cannot recommend this printer, and at this point I can no longer recommend Brother.

    Brother DCP-L2640DW review

I purchased this printer in February and expect to have 2400 copies/printouts printed on it by the end of June so I have really used it already! I wanted to wait until I knew if I really liked it before putting out this review. Overall with the exceptions listed under the cons below I do recommend the printer. Pros - Because of the cost of the toner, I purchased a toner program for 700 copies/printouts a month and that is working well. I am only on my 2nd toner and the 1st one came with the printer and so that was for only 1200 copies so not a full container. The warranty is extended 2 extra years by using the program but I don't expect to need that because my last Brother printer lasted over 6 years. I also had a $50 credit that paid for the first 3 months because I signed up in the first week of receiving the printer. - I have not had a jam in the machine so that is a great plus when you use it as much as I do. - The quality of the copies is very good. It uses only black toner so no color toners needed which is what I needed for my home needs. - My last Brother printer (similar model) could not be run by wi-fi because it constantly lost connection. This new one has only lost connection when we lost power so this is a very big plus for me. Cons - The 700 toner program is $15.99 plus tax per month. I used generic toner on my last printer so that was probably about $8.00 per month but I don't know how hard that may have been on the printer. This way I am sure to use Brother toner and it just shows up at my door. - The auto feed is very picky on how you put in the sheets, you need to pull them to one side or they grab the sheets wrong and wrinkle them as they feed through the machine. I don't know if this is a real problem just on my machine or all of the same printers or not but I am working around that because I don't want to be without my printer. - Because of the auto feed having to have the papers feed specifically the copies are off center and a little crooked. It bothers me a little but has not affected anyone who gets the copies so I am living with that. - When scanning landscape pages and viewing them on the computer by turning the scan the first page is lost. You need to put in a blank page first in order to see all the pages that have copy on them to compensate for this. Also, they don't save in the landscape orientation like you might prefer.

    Basic, Easy, Excellent.

I did alot of research before purchasing this printer, Ive had HP, Cannon and i did not like the support or the quality of machine. This Brother has been GREAT. You can print and scan from your computer over wifi, your phone from anywhere. Not a single glitch or error out of it in months. All for $200. Toner has lasted many pages, prints quick, and does not throw papers on the table or ground. I will without a doubt buy another in the future.
