Great smart plug, local control for HomeAssistant.

More and more I've been finding myself surprised by TP-Link and their smart-home offerings. This is no different. The plug is easy to set up and has energy monitoring, which is the draw here. For a small and easy to use smart plug, this thing has been fantastic for my smart home automation flow. It integrates super easily with voice assistants, but more importantly? It works with Home Assistant, with energy monitoring included. Unlike most other smart plugs, I just shoved this thing, set it up in my app, and was on my way. It was picked up by the appropriate devices and, with little to no setup effort, was working wonderfully. Not at all disappointed with my purchase.

Effortless Efficiency: TP-Link Kasa Smart Plug Mini

I'm pleasantly surprised by the TP-Link Kasa Smart Plug Mini with Energy Monitoring. Setting it up was a breeze – just plug it in, connect through the app, and it integrates seamlessly with my smart home devices. What stands out most is the energy monitoring feature, which is incredibly handy. It works flawlessly with voice assistants and even Home Assistant, making it a versatile addition to any smart home setup. Definitely a great buy if you're looking for a reliable and easy-to-use smart plug with extra features!

Reviewing the indoor and outdoor offerings

Summary: Reviewing three similar Kasa (TP-Link) smart plugs. After my initial review of the HS103P2, I found the KP115 with Energy Monitoring, so ordered that one too. Also ordered the outdoor version. Observations (construction): Like most modern manufactured items, this one is a snap together setup. The construction is decent. The relay is a 200V and 16A version, and should be able to pass full power (1875W for a 15A circuit). Recommendation: The newer model plug is KP115, released in Oct 2020; whereas the older model is HS103P2, released in March 2018. The newer plugs are more expensive, but I would pay the extra cost for the energy monitoring feature if needed. Software Setup: After downloading the app (iPhone), setup was straight forward. It appears to only connect to a 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi network; however, with my phone on the 5GHz network, I was still able to control the device. Generally 2.4GHz has better range, and 5GHz has better bandwidth, so 2.4Ghz is the appropriate band for this device (and most IoT devices). Upon completion of setup, the app offered to update the firmware (which completed in less than 5 minutes). Setup was the same for both (the outdoor didn't need a firmware update). Software Observations: Biggest disappointment with the Energy Monitor plugs is that the energy usage cannot be reset with the Kasa app. After doing some internet research, found that if you're on iOS, search for "Watt for Smart Devices" app in the Apple Store, it allows you to reset the energy usage. The Kasa app works okay. I do wish they had a lock out feature, making it a two step process to turn off power, which would be very important on a device like a computer. Pros: simple setup; firmware updates. Cons: energy usage not resetable via the Kasa app. Conclusion: At $22 for the KP115, rating this 4-stars (software deficiency, energy usage reset). I also ordered a two-outlet Outdoor plug (listed below), which I am rating 5-stars, and the older HS103P2 at 3-stars (one DOA). Versatile plug

I have both model 103 and 125 plugs. The 103 keeps track of run time, the 125 energy usage. There’s a separate app called watts that lets you reset to zero the cumulative total, otherwise I prefer the Kasa app. I used these to automate turning on and off electric blankets. I also have one on my lawn irrigation to shut it off when it’s unwanted, the rain sensor is far from perfect and I don’t want to run out to the shed to get to the control box. I have another on my crawl space dehumidifier. There are times I want to turn it off, say for possible de-icing, and I don’t want to go crawling under the house. These plugs are somewhat sensitive to the electrical outlet used and WiFi reception. They can work perfectly at some spots and not so good at others. I had one that seemed defective until I plugged it in beside one that worked perfectly. The questionable one worked perfectly at the relocated spot. The button on the side makes it easy to cycle it without having your phone with you. I did spend $20 to get a second WiFi router closer to the backyard shed for the irrigation control plug to work reliably. That solved the inconsistent switching issue. These plugs are compact and when located well with respect to your WiFi, are a great convenience. The Kasa app works well, other than lacking a reset for totals used.

These Kasa15A Power Monitor Plugs Work!

I have a few of these now and I couldn't be happier with them. They are small and take up just one space on a two connection outlet so I can still plug in something else with no problem. The Kasa App is easy to use too and I have no complaints with it. In the App tap on the device to open it and then I can see the power usage now and over time, run time, schedule on and off times for the plug and then a settings gear where I can change the name of the plug and add my own picture from my camera roll or from the camera itself. It also has device information. It has a grouping feature that I have never played with. One thing to note on setup. When setting up a new plug it asks you to connect to the device WiFi in the the phone settings. On the iPhone, after the device connects, I get a popup at the top of the screen that says I'm connected and if I tap on this popup to go back to the App it has always failed to connect to my network after that and I don't know why. The way I have success is after I connect to the device I exit settings and open the Kasa App again and continue from there. I have always had success with connecting to my home network this way as I continue setup of the plug. For me I'm using these inside the house to control night lights on a timer and an "away light" for security while we aren't home. I have one plug that amazingly can connect to my WiFi about 200 feet away at my garage to control a security light mounted on the outside. I also have three plugs in a little solar shed about 60 feet away from the house that are on all the time to tell me how much power my solar panels are producing. This is why I like these plugs so much. They just work and work well.

Wifi Socket that works and affordable

I like that it was very easy to setup. Just download the Kasa App and scan the QR code and you're in business. No need to be "techy" to use this. I'm using this WIFI socket to wirelessly turn on my Hail Protector Cover and it didn't disappoint. You can plug in a device up to 15A as advertise. There are also other products from Kasa and I intend to try them as well such as remotely controlled light switches for automation. I'm giving this 5 stars for ease of setup and does the job. As far as longevity, that's something I'll find out in a few months. I'll keep you all posted. As far as Alexa integration, it paired no issues.

    Couldn't live without these

I got this smart plug for an old laser printer of mine. This laser printer is quite old but still prints quite nicely. The issue with it is that the built-in network print server freezes up after a few days, not allowing anything to print. Until the printer is power cycled, it is effectively dead. Enter this smart plug.. I have it set to shut off at midnight every night and turn back on after 2 minutes. Since I have installed this smart plug, I have not had any issues with the printer being dead when I need to print something. These things are so handy for lights and for other uses if you are creative. We even have a few on older game systems that sit and waste power when not in use. Easy enough to tell Alexa to turn on the game system, then use the controller to actually power on the system. I highly recommend these smart plugs.

No Alexa Support and No Home Life app support

Very disappointing you have to use the KASA or other apps. I wanted it to work like my other GOSUND plugs where HOME LIFE app allows add and control, and Alexa picks it up and works fine with its routines, etc. I dont want to get all GEEKY into different apps and IFTTT stuff.. sure its superior, but I want dumb and easy. KASA is not it. Whatever. I guess if you are invested in KASA from the get go fine. but I am not. Installed the KASA APP created yet another useless account, and configured it, set a timer routine and deleted the app.. If the switch stops working or software glitches ever then I will throw it away as a unstable POS. Cant stand proprietary crap that doesnt seem to follow standards (i.e. HOMELIFE app)

    OFF / ON

I have a lot of these about the house. It has totally been 'set and forget'. I haven't and any issues related to these plugs. They are meant to turn on/off lamps and other low power devices. In the off chance that one stops responding then pull it out of the outlet and plug it back in. It should recover automatically. If that fails then reboot your router. In my opinion Alexa is overall better than Google with smart home devices.
