- Alexa wickey2024-05-20Works so well
So we were having trouble with our Xtreme Garage door opener. You would have to press the opener 20 times before it MIGHT open. And recently, it started not opening the door at all. So we decided to try this. It was SUPER easy to install and set up. It only took a few minutes, and I did it alone. When I tell you this thing works well, and works EVERY TIME…!!!! The only thing you really need to be aware of is that when you close the door, a light flashes for like 10 seconds or so before the door closes. So if zombies are chasing you, do not rely on this for safety. But it will open immediately when you press “open”. So at least you can get inside quickly! Also, it was really easy to send a link to my husband and my brother so that they can use it as well. The only thing I wish it had was a widget so that I didn’t have to pull up the app every time I leave or get home. Oh, and I DO love that I get a notification of the door opening and closing, and it will tell me how long it has been opened or closed. It is extremely convenient!
- Anonymous12024-06-09Add wifi access to existing garage door opener, but the app is annoying
The notification of garage door status is nice. The app is crappy and shows ads. There is also no widget, so it has to reload the app every time you want to open the garage door when you open the app. If you scroll through open apps, and MyQ is already open, the app isn't reloaded and works fine. It should work like a remote and not require 2-3 clicks/swipes to open the garage.
- Steve2018-05-30What Chamberlain doesn’t tell you (and should!)
You’re looking for a solution to open your garage door from a remote location. Package deliveries, the housekeeper, your tool-hoarding neighbor. This is one of several products out there that will do the trick. If you’re a garage door tech, move along. You know this already. If your a DIY homeowner with grand plans, you must read on - This is what Chamberlain should tell you about their system but doesn’t. While generally easy to install, without an Introduction or Basic Principles of Operation as a preamble, you will likely have the same issues I did. Read on for the lessons I learned and tips that will save your hair. I will explain each of the major elements of the system and provide suggestions to improve your probability of a successful installation. The Door sensor: This sensor communicates with the smart hub using Bluetooth to indicate door operation and open/ closed condition. During installation it is paired to the smart hub which is best performed with the unit attached to a closed door between 3’ and 10’ from the smart hub. By design, Bluetooth distance is limited to 33’ but don’t count on consistent operation at this extreme end of the range. Consider this distance during installation and future operation. Your 2.4ghz cordless phones, baby monitors, etc., can cause Bluetooth interference. Get them out. If your wireless router has a setting for Bluetooth coexistence, enable it. Your Wireless (Wi-Fi) Network: The Chamberlain documentation says that 2 bars of 2.4ghz WiFi signal is enough for consistent operation. This can be checked by looking on your phone. I say, your mileage may vary. I installed a dedicated access point for the smart hub as I couldn’t get the system to work reliably. A wired connection is also supported. Configure the smart hub with a static IP Address on your wireless network. This will help ensure the Chamberlain service can reach the smart hub quickly and easily when you activate the door. The additional time for the router or server to lookup a dynamic IP Address and establish a connection could create timing issues. The Smart Hub: The smart hub includes a Bluetooth receiver for the door sensor, a 2.4 ghz radio to connect to your wireless home network for the system to communicate with Chamberlain’s servers on the internet, and a radio frequency (RF) transmitter to send HomeLink rolling codes to your garage door opener (on a channel in the 300-400mhz range depending on your garage door opener) - just like your remote clicker. I discovered that the RF transmitter in the smart hub is fairly weak. While your car can transmit a signal a half block away, the smart hub can't. The instructions make a recommendation for placement of the smart hub but will make an explicit statement here - install it within the 4-6’ “recommendation”. Consider this when planning your installation. Apparently, orientation is important for maximum reach. If it doesn’t work reliably, flip it 180 degrees on its mount. Finally, like other garage door remotes, if it loses power you might have to re-program the system with the garage door learn button. They don’t tell you this so I will. Finally, the smart hub needs to be located where it can communicate with; 1) the door sensor (Bluetooth), 2) the garage door opener (RF) and, 3) your wireless (WiFi) network to work consistently! Each has its own distance limitations so placement of the hub is critical. Your garage door opener: You obviously have one to which you are adding this system. Do your homework and make sure it’s compatible before you buy. If you’re not positive, call or email them with your make and model numbers in hand. Mine is a Craftsman (Chamberlain) made in 1999 with the door sensors so I was good to go. NOTE: Garage door openers have a limit to the number of remotes they can support. My Craftsman supports 4 remotes. With two HomeLink-connected cars, the remote door opener, and the smart hub I am now at the max allowed by my opener. As a result, I had to decommission my "clickers". Do your homework and factor this into your plans. The Phone App: A basic, functional, app with a few frills. It works well enough though some settings are best changed on the web site (that I didn’t know about). When installing the smart hub your phone will need to be on your 2.4ghz wireless network to complete the setup. After that, it doesn’t matter what your phone is connected to - your home network or a cell connection. The system can be setup entirely from your phone. I set up an open alert, a close alert and a 10pm door not closed reminder. The alerts can be sent to you via Text or email. The Chamberlain service: Does not support Alexa or IFTTT (without a fee) and that’s fine for me. I always have my phone handy and I don’t need the security concerns that come with IFTTT. Also, multi-user accounts are not (yet) supported. I just program the wife’s phone with the same username/ password and off we go. The system is fairly rudimentary and in my opinion could use some added intelligence. If the system components exchanged more status information it could probably avoid situations where the “door [is] not responding” or better error status information could be presented to the user. Sometimes I think it’s just that Chamberlain's servers are slow. LED & Florescent lights: I hear you asking “why is this important?”. Both can emit radio and electromagnetic interference that can mask the signal between the smart hub and your opener. If you experience unreliable operation - out they go. The last thing I did was remove an LED lamp from a motion sensor fixture nearby and replaced it with a standard incandescent. Since the light is only on for a few minutes I’m not worried about the power usage if it means the garage door will close when commanded. I give Chamberlain credit for trying to make the install easy. Considering the different operating environments and variables, it’s a challenge to cover all the bases. Unfortunately, a quick start guide simply isn’t enough in this case and the online instructions are no better. They have made some assumptions about what you need to know (or don't need to know). The above precautions should be spelled out to avoid customer frustration and reduce the number of calls to their help desk (and returned product). The good news for me is that after 2 months of trial and error and multiple calls and emails to their help desk, I think we may finally have all the issues cleared up. My fingers are crossed. Now you know everything Chamberlain should tell you but doesn't. Best of luck!
- Amazon Customer2024-06-22Super easy install, works ok
I don't know why I didn't do this sooner. One time I left the house for the weekend, must have bumped the button folding the visor back up. Got home 2 days later, still open. Luckily we're in a safe neighborhood, but still this is worth the piece of mind. I just hope they never go back to charging monthly for the app. I figure if they do, I'm not out that much. I'm thinking they won't because now amazon and walmart can use it to securely leave deliveries inside. You can set when your expecting deliveries so don't worry about random weirdos getting in. Super easy install. Just download the app and follow step by step. The 5/32nds drill bit for the 2 long mounting screws was the most work...the rest is too cool for school. It worked 1st try and every try. It even still works with other openers no need to reprogram them as long as you don't hold down the learn button on the motor. They should tell you that before they tell you to press the button, but they just say press quickly. Only issue was registering the app using Google, kept getting error messages. I un-installed myq, reinstalled and from there it was a snap. There is a about a 10 second delay for it to go through the cloud to notify you your door was opened, but now no matter who opens it with any opener, I know, and I can close it from anywhere. Brilliant work Chamberlain. Thank you! Update after 1 week, so it decides when it alerts me. I get notifications 20 to 30 minutes later sometimes. As long as they don't charge for the app....I'm not complaining. The app itself shows pretty much real time, just strange the notifications are delivered whenever....
- Ronald Epstein2019-07-25Works well but here's a way to make it work better...
Let me start by saying I was on the fence for months as to whether I should actually buy this Garage Door opener from MyQ. The reviews on Amazon were very mixed and I wasn't too pleased that once I bought into this product, I would probably have to spend more. I will talk about that in a moment. I actually decided to make a purchase during Prime Day when the cost of this item sold for about $20 less than it regularly does. It seemed like an absolute bargain at that point. The installation was very simple. The mounting was a bit of a nightmare only because MyQ didn't fully explain that process in their directions. The installation process is a breeze, thanks to the mobile app which does an excellent job of walking you through the process, complete with videos that make a novice like me an expert. You basically use the app to pair the base unit and the sensor. The sensor comes with two-sided tape and gets placed on the inside of your garage door. The problem I ran into was the screws. MyQ provides you with 2 different sized sets of screws. They don't tell you that if you use the anchors, you must use the shorter screws. I used the longer ones. Now, I am sure most of you who are more handymen than I am probably could have figured that out on your own, but for someone not as mechanically inclined, it would have been nice for MyQ to give a better explanation of screw usage in their instruction manual. Once I undid the initial mistake, I was able to successfully mount the MyQ to my garage ceiling beam. One other note to make here: The mounting bracket is also a bit of a problem. You have to go through two sets of holes to drill in your screw. It's a little cumbersome. I wish the bracket was designed a little better to make it easier. I am guessing this was the best MyQ could do. All in all, I am not taking any stars away in this review for the clunky install and bracket. I am guessing most of you who are more handymen orientated won't have an issue. So, once installed, the garage opened and closed as expected using the remote. No issues there. The real nice surprise here was that, for the moment, MyQ is no longer charging people $10 a year to integrate MyQ with Google (and I think) Alexa. Previously, there was a subscription charge. That caused a huge amount of backlash from customers. I even swore I would not buy this product if a subscription was mandated. Well, for now, that subscription has been put on hold. You can get free integration for your smart device. Be aware that for the moment MyQ is saying this could be only temporary. Voice integration with Google Home Hub is not as fluent as you would hope. You can't just say, "Hey Google, is my Garage Door open?" of "Hey Google, close my garage door." You have to say, "Hey Google, ask MyQ if my Garage Door is Open." I am not exactly happy about that extra step. Also, do realize that there are extra security measures put in place that prevent homeowners from giving smart devices opening commands. You can't say, "Hey Google (or Alexa) open my Garage Door." The reason behind this is so burglars can't yell that command from outside your home in hopes of your smart device picking it up. HOWEVER....HOWEVER...HOWEVER... There is a new, free software workaround that allows you to open and close your garage door through Alexa (and probably Google) commands. You don't need to buy the $15 kit. If you want more information you can reply to me in the comments. One other thing I need to mention here. If you want iOS/Homekit support you need to buy the additional $90 MyQ bridge. I found that aspect to be unfortunate as that add-on is severely overpriced. I will end up purchasing it just so that I can open and close my garage door using the new iOS 13 Carplay functionality which puts Homekit on your navigation screen. It would be great, as I arrive home to say, "Hey Siri, open my garage door." So, bottom line: The MyQ garage door opener works great out of the box. Some of its smart home command functionality is limited, but there are workarounds.
- Dad2024-06-15Great Product
I have purchased several of these for installation on different homes. The installation is quite easy and takes very little time. I was concerned about whether I could install multiple controllers using the same application. When done, I will have installed three controllers onto three different wifi systems in three different locations. Of which, one location is roughly 1200 miles from where I spend the majority of my time. I have no problem opening and closing the garage door from that distance. And, whenever someone uses the garage door in any of the locations, I am notified of the opening and closing. I am a Prime member but have not as yet used the in garage delivery by Amazon. I look forward to utilizing the service and will update my review when I do. My only disappointment was customer support and even the user community response; I put the question out there about the use of different wifi systems with different controllers using the same application. Maybe, I didn't phrase my questions properly. But, I did not receive an informative or complete response. The customer support response was that it will use two controllers on the same system. And, I received a second response of "What's the issue?" Finally, I just tried adding the controllers and it worked fine without issue. I do recommend this product. It works well, is easily installed and reasonably priced.
- Ted Pavlic2020-05-31Don't count on Alexa or Google Home integration (but Amazon Key works!). Otherwise, works well.
We purchased this product because we often left the home wondering if we forgot to close the garage (even though we almost always did) and wanted a way to check and close the garage remotely. This smart garage hub was extremely simple to install. I had to be a little creative in making sure it had power (see picture with short extension cord that now feeds both my opener and the myQ hub), but otherwise it was an easy as hanging a picture. The myQ app steps you through the process of adding it to your WiFi, pairing with the garage door sensor, and pairing with your garage. I chose this brand over some of the others (like
- Allison2020-11-24OPPOSITE EXPERIENCES!!!
I stress about packages sitting on the doorstep, so I was really excited about Amazon Key where they deliver packages inside your garage with this Chamberlain garage door opener. I am so pleased with this convenience and no longer worry about packages. I have set this up in TWO houses in difference states, with different internet providers/equipment and totally different experiences. In the first house, it was very easy to set this up. I followed the instructions in the box to initially get started. It comes with two parts: a “hub” which is the brain of the thing that plugs in to an electrical outlet, and a sensor that sticks to the back of your garage door with provided Velcro sticky mounts. First you install the MyQ app on your phone, and the app provides you with step-by-step instructions. It’s really easy. It also asks if you want to “show me”(watch a short video for certain steps). You can skip the short videos if you want to, but I found them to be very helpful. The major steps are: (1) sync the hub to your phone (2) connect the hub to your wi-fi (3) stick the sensor onto the back of your garage door (4) test the connection between the garage door sensor and the hub and test that it opens the door. After everything tests out okay, they tell you how to mount the hub in a permanent place. It needs to be plugged into an outlet in your garage, within 50 feet of your wi-fi source (your router), and at least 6 feet off the floor. I mounted mine to the ceiling in the garage, plugged it into the same outlet where the garage door opener is plugged in. The whole setup was very easy. So far, Amazon has delivered 4 packages inside my garage—out of the rain and away from passers by. I do not usually have a need to open my garage door remotely, so I pretty much use this just for Amazon Key deliveries. But, have you ever left home and then wondered if you remembered to close the garage door? This gizmo will let you know if your door is open or shut. Relief. Some people complained that the MyQ app is not integrated with other apps like SmartThings. I don’t really care about that. This device cost $30, and it came with a coupon to get $30 off my first Amazon Key delivery (limit of one). I have two individual garage doors, and purchased a second sensor for the second door. The first garage door setup was basically free. How can you beat that?? I had such a good experience with house 1, that I decided to do the same set up in our vaation home, in a different state. TOTALLY OPPOSITE EXPERIENCE tried literally everything, but the Hub would not connect. I finally concluded that my brand of router/modem in the vacation home was not compatible. I spent many hours researching this on the internet and also on the phone with both MyQ and Chamberlain both. They were both very helpful, but NO LUCK it just would not work. The router we were using was TP Link AC1900 Archer 8, and the modem was Netgear CM600. One or the both of them just did not work with this MyQ devise. TWO YEARS later, we changed internet providers to Century Link--they provide their own router/modem so I am not longer using the TP Link/Netgear equipment. I decided to try the MyQ hub again and it was VERY EASY to connect with no issues with Century Link's Quantum Fiber equipment. We have two separate garage doors with two separate openers. I was able to connect both garage openers to the same hub, and order an extra sensor for the second garage door. I am VERY HAPPY to be able to use Amazon Key service in our vacation home now. I don't know why, but it currently costs the SAME regardless of whether you purchase a complete HUB WITH the sensor OR a second sensor alone. Even though I could use the original HUB for the second garage door, I ordered the complete hub/sensor set and am using only the sensor for the second garage door. I figure that I have a "free" backup HUB in case I have a problem with it later. I write honest reviews to help others make informed purchases. I do that because I read reviews myself and appreciate how helpful they can be. I hope my review helped you.
- Amazon Customer2024-06-07Would be a 5 star product if it supported stated its privacy policy clearly.
For the money, it's hard to beat this product. The door sensor is a far better design than other competing products that use a magnetic switch, which can get knocked or shaken out of alignment. It senses whether the door is open or closed based on its vertical (closed) or horizontal (opened) orientation. The installation is very easy, although the mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended if you have an outlet near the garage opener unit. You may encounter difficulty separating the film from the double-stick mounting tape. Use a sharp knife or razor to separate it from the corner. Be prepared to tear it and replace it with your own double-sided mounting tape, if it proves too hard to remove. Unfortunately, the app doesn't support HomeKit as do other brands, but considering the price, ease of installation and use, it's not a deal killer. The app is decent and can be set to notify you when the door has been left open after a set amount of time. Interestingly, the previous version of the app did support HomeKit. The big concern is the product's privacy policy. It's directly connected to internet via your home's WIFI router in order to operate it when you're not home. The very low cost of the device leaves me wondering if it's collecting and reporting data to the manufacturer or its "partners." It could conceivably track when your home based on whether the garage door is open or closed. What it could do with this data will be left to your imagination. Perhaps, they dropped HomeKit due to Apple's privacy protection policies.
- AutumnNicole2024-06-25Game changer
I have the most up to date version of this 6/2024. I’m not sure about the previous models, but this is a game changer for me. My mother is handicapped and lives alone. She has visitors a few times a day and people in and out the house. They frequently enter through the garage. Either they have a garage door opener or my mom will open it from her room. Between depending on many people for transportation it’s easier to just bring the garage door opener with her. At times she misplaced it or leaves it somewhere, which is quite inconvenient. She asked me about being able to purchase a whole new system so she can just open it from her phone because sometimes she is not even sure if someone closed it behind them… this system was less than $25, me a 30 yr female installed in less than 10 minutes and it even tells her when it was opened, by who and whether it’s opened and closed or for how long. My mom loves this and I love this for her! It’s peace of mind.
