I tried two Schlage WiFi adapters and both didn't work. "Unable to Connect to wifi Error." I initially spoke with Schlage helpdesk. The said there's a problem with the printing on the unit. As others stated, they said to reverse the upper case with lower case letters. After numerous attempts, that didn't work. Helpdesk offered to send me a used and lab tested unit they know works. Or, I could wait until February to a new replacement unit. I'm speculating they're scraping this unit and a re-engineered product will be available soon. Hopefully, they'll produce a stable, reliable, product that works soon. I'm returning the second unit. This product is an embarrassment for such a large company. UPDATE: I’m extremely happy with it!!! 5 Stars! I’ve been using it for almost a year now. When I purchased my BR400 there was a bad batch with buggy hardware. I couldn’t get it to connect to the app. Schlage helpdesk told me unofficially to reorder it to get the redesigned hardware. Schlage redesigned the hardware at that time. That’s why there was a lot of bad reviews about a year ago. The replacement BR400 is very stable and never disconnects and all feature work flawlessly. There’s been a few software and app updates but all went fine. TIPS: Battery wear – My locksmith told me people have low battery life because they don’t install the deadbolt to operate super smooth so the motor and armature work too hard taxing the battery. The battery should last 2 years if all runs super smooth. Make sure the deadbolt and door are aligned, which isn’t too difficult. Initial WiFi setup – It’s easier to connect with the BR400 close to the router. Then, un-plug and move the BR400 to where you want to use. Keep in mind range and walls. The closer the lock to the BR400 the better. But, you can unplug the BR400 and move it to different locations for best performance. You won’t have to re-setup the BR400 after you unplug.

Updated 11/2018: Still totally rock solid after replacement. I haven't had any difficulty with the locks or wifi access since. Even through a couple of ISP disruptions, once the network is back up the locks are immediately accessible. Updated 5/2018: Ok, my view is totally different now. Schlage ended up replacing my WiFi adapter. That plus the more recent firmware revisions has made this device work great. I haven't touched it in at least 6 months now. We were happy with the Schlage Sense locks before. Now we're really happy with the whole system - notifications of lock status changes are very quick and we get them anywhere we go, and remote lock, unlock and user/code management all work great. Original Review: *---- Big hassle to get set up as others have said. I tried various tips, and found that none worked. In my case the app seemed to be timing out in the transition from the WiFi direct connection to the BR400 to our normal WiFi. So what worked for me was to watch for when the WiFi direct connection was dropped, and then I quickly connected my phone back to my house WiFi. Finally after about a dozen tries connected and got its firmware update (to 1.0.2). Despite all that it only worked for a week. Stopped getting notifications and couldn't control the lock any more. The BR400 WiFi Adapter now shows as Offline in the app. The only way I can control the lock is in airplane mode + Bluetooth on my phone so that the Sense app won't try to connect through the BR400. So the lock is working fine. Factory reset and re-connected the BR400 successfully (after 3 tries, stupid thing), and it's back but still showing up Offline. I had high hopes but this thing has been a huge hassle. Maybe a new firmware can rescue it?
- PonyChonies2018-08-13Great product but installation is a bit of a headache
Bought this for our Schlage Sense door look which we love aside from the rare failure to lock when you press the lock button from the outside. Opening the door and toggling the lock from the inside always fixes the problem. Anyhow we got this to try with Alexa and as peace of mind to check the lock when away. On to the review - Packaging is reminiscent of an iphone box, simple and functional. Two pamphlets inside about installation and warranty info which I didn't look at or read. I did end up reading them later but that still didn't help. We have had our Schlage lock for at least a year. I assumed that I could just install this adapter and have new features but it was a bit more complicated than that. I'll spare the details and just say that it doesn't work like that... or at least it didn't for me. I had to delete the door profile we had and create a new one all together. Adding the adapter to the door just wouldn't work for me, once I figured that out it was less of a pain. There was also a moment where I tried to install the adapter and it wanted to update the firmware right away which I did. After the update the app forgot the adapter I had just connected and the update itself took about ten minutes. Reconnected the adapter and name it Front Door and all was well. Alexa pairing - I had never enabled or added any "skills" before connecting this adapter so I didn't know how to go about telling Alexa to lock my front door or to see if it was locked. That is pretty easy aside from the fact that my Amazon app freezes and crashes every time I enable a skill on my 7 plus. Just click the top left corner of the Alexa app and scroll down to skills, close the annoying pop-up and the search for Schlage, make sure to have your Schlage login email and password as you will need it to finish enabling the skill. Now I just say, Hey Alexa, lock the front door and it works great. Not entirely sure if that phrase only works because I named the adapter Front Door but I can tell you that it will work if you do name it that.
- Matt2018-05-14Has worked flawlessly for me. Here are my step-by-step instructions for Apple Home Kit Users to get this to work
I was frustrated because my Schlage Sense and my 4G Apple TV were not connecting via bluetooth. Therefore, neither HomeKit nor the Schlage Sense app would recognize the lock unless I was virtually standing right next to the lock, rendering all remote capabilities -even if my "remote" location was simply in our bedroom - useless. Here is exactly what I did. It took me about 10 minutes to set up, and after a day of testing both on my home's WiFi and away from my home using cellular, I can confirm that the system (so far) is working flawlessly. 1. If your Wi-Fi network has both 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz capabilities - and most do - temporarily disable the 5 ghz channel 2. Remove the Schlage lock from your HomeKit configuration. 3. Delete the Schlage Sense app from your phone 4. Turn off and re-start your phone 5. Make sure that you have handy the original Programming Code and User Codes that came with your lock when you bought it. 6. Re-set the Schlage lock to its factory configuration. Do so by a) disconnect the battery connector, b) press and hold the outside Schlage button, and while holding the outside Schlage button, reconnect the battery connector, c) make sure that you correctly reset the lock to its factory configuration by pressing the outside Schlage button and then entering one of the two four digit User Codes that came with the lock (if successful, the lock should run through a quick locking sequence. 7. Reinstall Schlage app on phone. 8. From the Schlage app on phone, create a Schlage account (you'll need to enter a valid email account and create a password) 9. Add your lock to the Schlage Sense app by tapping on the "+Lock" icon on the top right of the screen. 10. If you get an "it looks like you're using a Home Kit configuration" message, tap on "Explore Other Options" 11. When asked, enter the Programming Code from the original documentation, first on your phone and then on the lock. You'll then be asked to establish and name the code you want to use on the lock's outside keypad. 12. *Do not plug the wifi adapter in to an outlet yet*. Tap on the 3-bar icon on the upper left of the Schlage app screen. 13. Tap "Wi Fi Adpaters" 14. Tap the "+" icon. 15. When indicated, scan the QR code on the back of the WiFi adapter with your phone. 16. Plug the WiFi adapter in to an outlet. 17. Follow the instructions, which will include entering your Wifi account and password. 18. Once your WiFi adapter connects, it might ask if you want to update its firmware. Do so if asked by following the instructions. 19. Test everything out from the Schlage Sense app by using it to unlock and lock the door first while your phone is on your local wifi, and second, when your phone is on your cellular network. 20. If everything is working right, remember to go back to the controller for your Wi-Fi router to turn the 5 ghz channel back on. 21. Fly to some remote corner of the earth to lock and unlock your home's front door, while thinking all along: this is the coolest thing ever!
- Jose L. Ferrero2019-05-24Horrible Device
This got to be the WORST device in the world, the instructions are easy to follow but the device itself its the WORST.... The device turns off and on like crazy while your trying to set it up. IT Never finds any Wi-Fi no matter how many hundreds of tries you make. Finally when you get to see the wifi list, it says you can't connect to the Network because it just didn't want to or because it turned off. After 2000 times I finally got to connect it to the Network but of course since the Device sucks this happened. The device started to update its firmware and well it says its going to take a few seconds which is a big lie, and considering that I have Fiber Internet. FINALLY when the device stopped updating its firmware and it's basically finished, it went and said CANT CONNECT TO THE WIFI ADAPTOR to the Network. I mean your paying 50$ for a piece of crap, worst Firmware or GUI ever, you hit back it's the same screen. I tried on my Android and on my wife's Apple, the app is clearly for Apple users because it's a little better there. So after 3 hours of trying to connect the damn device and having my hopes up at the end it didn't work, and of course NO ONE tells you the device is only 2.4 GHz and that you have to disable the 5.0 (I figured it out because of some other mad customers). I want a replacement of this ..... device because I want to use my Lock thru my Android which is the point that i bought it for.
- Manuel Garcia2020-06-20In order for it to work you need to do the proper steps specially if using IOs Phones
I have read many reviews before getting this device and I mostly all saying it doesn't connect to Wi-Fi. I decided to buy one and try, it didn't work. I called Schlage support. We went through the steps with support several time, it does detect the Wi-Fi but not the lock to pair. Frustrating because I am an IT and I check all the settings and realized it is not a Wi-Fi issue. I returned as per instructions of Support, I ordered a new one and the same issue. I called support again and got a person who asked something that the other support person didn't ask. When you set the lock first with IOS. in the Schlage sense app, it will ask which app to use even though you are already using the sense app. IF you select The "Home" app or any other in the iphone it will work with the lock and the sense as well but.... the BR400 will not pair because it is designed to work with the sense app. only. Please make sure you do not add the HOME app to the Schlage Sense app, use only the sense app and you will be able to pair the BR400 with the lock. It is not that doesn't connect to Wi-Fi. it is that doesn't connect the BR400 via blueTooth to the lock to pair. (at least in my case) BR400 is a converter technically, Gets Wi-Fi signal then send command to Lock via BlueTooth. Another thing you need to know, your Wi-Fi Router or AP cannot be using smart connect or Sharing band 2.4 Ghz and 5G. They need to be sending the signal independenly. With different SSID. Too much blah Blah. Bottom line, make sure you only use the Schlage Sense with the lock in your Iphone not The Home app or any other together.
- James Damoulakis2019-08-28Finally remote functionality works reliably with Schlage Sense
I purchased the BR400 after finding that using Apple HomeKit a Schlage Sense was an exercise in futility. HomeKit would never work reliably when I was attempting to access the lock remotely despite numerous reinstallations. In stark contrast, the BR400 has performed flawlessly over the past month since it was installed. I can always check my lock status and remotely lock or unlock whenever I need to. Installation was relatively easy, but I would highly recommend reading other owners comments detailing the installation process. The instruction sheet is a bit too simplistic. Two pieces of advice for easier installation: temporarily disable 5ghz band on your router day during installation, and do not plug in the BR400 until instructed to do so by the app. Also wait patiently while any software updates are being done after plugging in the device. The update can take a while, and I had to fight the urge to abort the process and restart. The update did eventually complete and everything connected ok. Once setup, the device has worked like a charm. I extremely disappointed with how problematic and unreliable Apple HomeKit was to the point that I have completely disabled it in favor of other smart home platforms. However, with the BR400, my Schlage Sense s now functioning the way I expected it to work.
- Amazon Customer2017-11-27Difficult to set up, lots of key details not in the documentation, slow
There are a number of crucial things you need to know about this device before you buy/install: * If you've paired your lock with HomeKit, it will NOT work with this adapter. To use this adapter, you'll have to factory reset the lock itself first. * To factory reset the lock, you need a unique programming code that requires either A) saving the manual someplace you can find it and referring to the sticker on front; or B) disassembling the lock to get at the code printed inside the front compartment. * Once you've done all that, when you try to pair with the app to start the process all over again it'll STILL suggest you use HomeKit instead; you have to say No and then set up a Schlage account. After you've done all that and have the lock configured, you have to configure the Wi-Fi adapter. To do that, you need to know: * The programming code on the adapter is case sensitive * If you have both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks in your home, you need to tell your phone to forget the 5 GHz network while you set up the adapter * During the setup process the screen will go blank for more than a minute on Step 6, and you won't really know if anything is happening Once you've done all of that (which in my case meant one factory reset of the lock and two factory resets of the adapter, plus two firmware upgrades), you're all set. EXCEPT, one more thing they don't tell you -- using the app to lock and unlock your door with the Wi-Fi adapter is *slower* than it was just using a bluetooth connection between the phone and the door. This makes sense, of course, but they don't mention anywhere that it might take 10 seconds for your door to respond. Oh, and if you want to use the Alexa skill? It'll only lock the door and report the door's lock status. It's not capable of unlocking the door. Why? Who knows. Still don't regret buying it; in my use case it makes sense to have. But I wish it was faster and had better documentation.
- Robert M Alberts2024-04-06It took a while
It was exactly what I ordered but I haven't put it use just yet.
- Amazon9772 User2024-04-30WiFi portion stopped after 2 years
It worked great for 2 years. Then, suddenly, it wasn’t connecting with my phone. Phone app always reported dead batteries - even with new batteries. Ran through batteries in a week. I disconnected the WiFi portion. Now the lock works, just not with my phone :(
