- Eric Olsen2024-03-29No change to the green slime issue, product still arrives covered.
I ordered a replacement switch for the one that no longer works (been in service for years). The replacement product arrived with the green slime; I thought I received a returned unit. As such, a request was made for a replacement and that unit was also slimed. One would expect some action from the manufacturer; its been about a year since the first slime report. The unit was sprayed with cleaner all over the device so the install/setup could continue - however, the setup failed. Reluctantly, I contacted support and was guided by a very helpful person who informed me that the original WiON app no longer works and that I should install and use the ECO-Plug app - doing so resolved the issue and the new device setup properly. In fact, the ECO-Plug app also connected to my original plug and that is also working. My replacement order - another return to Amazon. There's no mention on the app store of the original app no longer working. This company has failed the consumer in so many ways.
- Young's2018-11-29No Customer Service - But Great Product
This is the second Wion outdoor plug I purchased. Over 1 year ago the first one installed with out a hitch and works great. The timer function (dusk to dawn with 20 minute offsets) is easy to set up. The distance it receives the wifi signal is impressive - it is mounted on my dock and easily picks up the WIFI signal from the house more than 100 feet away. The second one was a nightmare to set up. First I had the problem with naming the plug with a name longer the 5 characters. Thanks to all the Amazon reviews I figured that out. Next I used different amazon account for each plug because I forgot which account I used on the first plug 1 year ago. Even with that mistake, the WION app found both plugs but Alexa could only find one plug. The fix was easy, put both plugs on the same amazon account in the WION app. Next I disabled the WION skill in the Alexa App, then I re-enabled the skill and signed on to the Amazon account. Then Alexa was able to find both plugs. I normally would not give 5 stars to something with such limited customer support - but these are well engineered and easy to set up if you don't use a name longer than 5 characters and make the mistake of using two different amazon accounts. I have smart home devices from Leviton, iHome, Insignia(Best Buy), Amazon brand, Ecobee, and others. I think these plugs are some of the best designed, best operating and easy to install. Its too bad the traps in setup are only documented in Amazon reviews ...
- Phelps NY Chick2018-12-16Quality Control Inconsistent
I ordered two of these. One is still working perfectly, the second one was pretty much bad out of the box. I don't use these very often, mostly just for decor lighting during holidays. It displayed a red light for power and the wi fi light would blink but never recognize in the list of wifi connections. I also tried it at work just to rule out the connection portion. I just got around to fiddling with the 2nd one to see what the problem was as it wouldn't reset. Following the advise of some other users, I began to unscrew the back cover only to see a SCREW THAT WAS ALREADY STRIPPED. Which leads me to believe the 2nd one I bought was merely recycled damaged goods. I was able to get the cover off and noticed that a soldered connection fell off upon opening. Having two full time jobs I don't have time to get the soldering kit out so won't be rebuying these. Buyer beware.

This review is for the Wi-FI version of the outlet, NOT the standard "remote control" (non-Wi-Fi) version. An outstanding product. Unboxed, plugged in, connected to wi-fi, and was using the app on my phone in about ten minutes. Pros: * Easy to connect to wi-fi * Has a variety of settings that are easily accessed through the app on my iPhone: Programmable Timer, Countdown Timer, Astronomic Timer, Vacation Random, and Security Random. The Programmable Timer (a multi-day timer) is easy to set and adjust. * You can give a custom name to the device(s) that you are controlling. I called mine "icicle lights". * Has two outlets. It's worth noting that the two outlets can not be controlled independently. Whatever settings you use for one outlet have to be used for the second outlet. * Has a simple on/off "switch" on the app so I can easily override the programmed settings. * A good value for the cost. Cons: * Haven't found any so far. Setup: * MY WiOn 50049 Outdoor Wi-Fi Outlet (2 outlets), is connected to an Airport Extreme router. The WiOn app is installed on my iPhone 6s. Works very nicely. Used to connect my icicle lights to my wi-fi network. No more having to go up and down the stairs to turn them on and off or fiddling with a clunky digital timer or reprogramming the timer when the power goes out. One thing to note: When the app "searches for the router", it can take a few minutes for it to find it, depending on the speed of your mobile device.
- Robert A. Hart2016-04-02Update from previous 2 star rating.
Below is my original review - mainly due to non-responsive customer service. I finally did get an email response and a phone number (and name) to call. I spent about 15 minutes on the phone with the contact person. He walked through several possible causes and solutions. And although we couldn't pin it down to any one of them directly, the past two days the App has been flawless, with both timers (two locations/two different servers) show up immediately every time I open the App. I have changed my rating to a 5 star - the product is fantastic (the timers always worked flawlessly), and now I can control both locations from anywhere, any time I log in. For anyone looking to use one of these timers to control a 1/2 horsepower/15 amp pump - this works like a charm. I'm ordering more of these, plus the wall switches. Great products. Original review below. I give the product itself a 5-star for working as stated in the advertisement. I give 3 stars based on the following: I bought two of these. One is used in a primary home, the second in a vacation home. Both were set up and the timers operate as scheduled. And both are linked to wifi and the cloud. However, when I open the App, the outlet in my primary home shows up each and every time. But the one in my secondary home only shows up periodically. If I shut down the App, then restart - eventually both timers show up, but it may take 15 or 20 restarts to get both on the screen. If I turn off the wifi and rely totally on my 3g/4g/lte the secondary home never shows up, and the primary home will only turn on/off with the APP on occasions. Most times I get an error message ".....wifi is not stable". Well, of course not, it's turned off. And, I give zero stars for their customer support. Even though there is a fantastic 'compose and send a message' icon, right on the Wion APP, the company has not responded to my message - not even a "we'll check this out and get back with you".
- Home owner2017-12-11Great idea. Works great when finally working
Great idea. Works great when finally working. The Good: I can control various outdoor lights with the 4 devices I purchased. with the wion app and alexa. Worked through the snow we received in NY this weekend. Now that they are set up I really like controlling and scheduling outdoor lighting from anywhere. The Bad: Set up was a nightmare. Part of it was because I have a big property and had to assign different wifi networks to different wion devices and always check which had the strongest signal. The biggest problem was the instructions and the app. Sometimes the app didn't find any wifi. Or the app went out of set up. Then my android phone asked me if I wanted to stay connected to the wion device. Because this step wasn't in the app, I ignored it and never connected. I spent fruitless time resetting the wion to factory setting to try to connect.. Finally I instructed my phone to stay connected to the wion device and then connected promptly to wifi. The device plugs into a receptacle with a very rigid 90 degree plug, which made it impossible to put 2 wion devices directly into one receptacle. Don't plan on using 2 wion on one receptacle. The cord is very short and stiff, so it is hard to position with the plugs down to avoid water entry into the plugs. There are 2 outlets on the device. 3 would be more sensible. I'm using 5Watt LED lights so power draw isn't an issue. In addition, the rim around the outlets is close so big outdoor plugs are a tight fit. In brief, poor industrial design and installation instructions, but a great concept and it seems to work well.
- Alfred02017-12-10Very well made product. Easy to set up.
Bought my outdoor connector 2 years ago. It controls my 100+ feet of outdoor Christmas lightening and decorations for almost 2 month of the year (late November to early January). It Works flawlessly. This year I was surprised that after being disconnected and stored away with the decoration; the unit was able to reconnect to the home wireless network without me reconfiguring it. I plugged in the outlet, it blink rapidly like searching for the wireless SSID and connected without a problem. I like the application too. I have it installed on my IPhone and IPad devices. I find it to be user friendly and very flexible with the editing and scheduling of events. I also own one of their light switches which I used to control my front porch lighting. I have been using the switch every day for almost 3 years. It has lost connection to the home wireless 2 times, due to prolonged power outage in my nations capital city. To reconnect it to the home wireless, I just pressed the reset button in the unit with a toothpick, the unit blinks blue for a few it then stops blinking and the light becomes a solid blue indicating that the unit is connected to the home Wi-Fi. It is a well made product. I will buy it again and recommen it. NOone has payed/given me anything for my comment.
- Fast Eddy2022-11-30Software updated! Works great again
This would have been a 5 star review, except for one major issue: software. I have 4 of these outlets and they have worked dependably and consistently for several years. However, the WiOn app hasn’t been updated in quite some time, and it no longer works with my iPhone running iOS16. So… I’m unable to set up and program the outlets anymore, rendering them useless. I’ve contacted customer service three times (both email and voicemail; couldn’t talk with an human) and have received no response. I can’t recommend this item until the software issue is resolved. UPDATE: WiOn has updated their software to work with the new iOS update. All is fine, and I reiterate the complement I made: it works reliably and consistently. Highly recommend WiOn outlets.
- S. Church2017-11-30Update: Great hardware, app is no longer maintained, alternate app available
Edit 2: It seems Southwire / Woods has merely rebranded the ECO Plugs RC-028W. I was able to install the ECO Plugs app from the Google Play store and successfully connect a factory-restored WiOn outlet to my router with it. It took me a few factory resets and forgetting the ECO-serial network on my phone and reconnecting, but the connection eventually succeeded. Although the Woods WiOn app is abandonware, the ECO Plugs app is a passable substitute updated for compatibility with Android 9. Connecting with the ECO Plugs app is quirky, though. A successful connection to the router does not deactivate the plug's temporary wifi access point. --- Edit 1: Beware! The Woods WiOn Android app doesn't fully work on the latest version of Android. It doesn't appear that Woods / Southwire has updated their app in a year and a half. Unless you have access to a device with an older version of Android, you may not be able to get this outlet to connect to your router. The out-of-box router connection dialog simply will not appear as it should when a new outlet is detected, regardless of clearing your phone's cache and app data or resetting your outlet back to factory defaults. Maybe the ECO Plugs app would be a suitable workaround? Maybe, but I haven't tried it to see. I ended up digging an ancient Android 4.4.2 device out of a drawer to perform the connection to my wireless network. Also, the WiOn products domain seems now to be controlled by a cybersquatter. There is no longer a website available for you to find support or documentation for this outlet. The outlet and its app are abandonware. I emailed Southwire a request for assistance, then followed up with my Android 4.4.2 workaround. If they respond with anything worthwhile, I'll update this review. So far my emails have gone ignored. --- Original review: Rugged, stable network connectivity from the opposite corner of the house and through walls, and Alexa integration is flawless. The WiOn app features above-average flexibility, offering automation with many triggers: time of day, countdown, astronomic, and random vacation timers. It does not offer Google or IFTTT integration, though. Bear in mind that Internet of Things devices such as this are heavily dependent on a reliable router. If you've got a garbage router, don't bother with this or any other IoT / smart home devices until you've upgraded. The Internet of Things tends to expose latent instability in mediocre routers. If you're not running Tomato, DD-WRT, Google Wifi, Ubiquiti, or better, don't blame inexplicable disconnections on your outlets. With OEM router firmware, more often than not, bugs are par for the course.
- Sharon P2017-04-21Good hardware; problematic app
After a few days of use, I can say this: The actual hardware works. The problem is the app. Example: I wanted to have it run for an hour from 11:30 p.m. It claims a "countdown timer." So I set the countdown timer, and, in doing so, it looked like this: Start 11:30 p.m. 4/21/17. Stop 12:30 a.m. 4/21/17. Noticing that this would run for about ... 100 years, I manually changed the stop time to 12:30 a.m. 4/22/17. Then I waited. It didn't turn off at 12:30 a.m. on 4/22. More experimentation is in order, but my tentative guess is that DESPITE what the timer said (about 12:30 the same day), it had originally been set for an hour, and that by changing the date, I messed this up in some way. My conclusion, however, is that whoever programmed the app did not consider the possibility of a timer running past midnight, and just set it up wrong. Which is a shame because, otherwise, this thing is EXACTLY what I wanted. I don't have it controlling lights, I have it controlling the circulation pump for my hot water heater. (The pump was initially on a timer, but I got annoyed with having to run outside the house any time I wanted hot water outside the timer hours.) I have it set for a "morning shower" sort of timer, which (so far) has been turning on and off exactly as programmed. It also has no difficulty with just turning the pump on and off from the app (which saves me from the run-outside thing I was trying to avoid). The only place where it has fallen down on the job (so far) is if I want to turn it on for a couple hours at night (to, say, have the dishwasher running overnight). But I quite like it. I may acquire a second one for the holiday lights.
