    Budget friendly smart feeder

3 year review update! My auto pet feeder shown in the pictures, 12 years old, by a different brand stopped working. I was using this smart feeder to feed our kitten but now it has to be used to commingle all food for both of our cats until we can get our other feeder repaired or replaced. There was not a double feeder splitter three years ago when I bought mine and I had to buy a 3D printed one and make do! So A problem with my splitter and the one the company makes is that there is no way to keep the bowls from sliding around or being pushed and pulled out of place by the cats when they go digging looking for food. My other stainless steel feeder has a strong magnetic base that holds the very reasonably sized bowls in place. The bowl that comes with this pet feeder is a bit ridiculous and over sized especially if wanting to use to feed multiple cats. Otherwise I use my own bowls and splitters and I LOVE being able to feed meals and snacks from my phone. I don’t like that everything is plastic compared to my higher end stainless steel pet feeder. A giant heavy cook book now permanently lives on top of this machine to stop our mischievous kitten from being able to push the button and over feed herself and others. I like having access to the button to give snacks especially since when I am at home I usually don’t know where my phone is to use the app. I have not installed any back up batteries and I love that it auto programs to daylight savings and settings aren’t lost after a power outage. 7 months of use UPdATE: Here we are after a lot of use and my issues are #1. The blue button led light is horrifically bright. I ended up putting electrical tape over the top of it just last night after months of just keeping the user manual over it. This light should turn off either with the app or just automatically and For me this is a major design flaw. #2. The clock isn’t adjustable so i can’t set it to sync with another automatic feeder that I have from a different company. #3. I bought the double feeder splitter and I wish this feeder had a better base to accommodate multiple cat bowls. I have to place the edge of the Bowles underneath the base of the feeder or the food will end up all over the floor. Thankfully nothing major has happen and things are still working for now. Newly installed day 1. It seems that Petsafe fixed all the issues from the previous model. The WiFi 2.0 has a “child lock” aka smart cat lock out feature that renders the top feeding button inert. It also seems to have a low food alert through the app and the ability to reorder food through Alexa. Installation Pro TIP: make sure that the font size on your phone or iPad is set to the smallest setting possible otherwise when using the app words may appear jumbled and distorted. Most importantly you won’t be able to get passed the initial instruction screen that tells you how to set up WiFi. The Bad News: #1 When scheduling feeding times there is only the option to set times in 15minute increments. So I can’t set my feeder to go off at 4:58pm with my other non smart feeder. It will only set to 4:45pm or 5pm. #2. The plug is huge and due to its size hinders the ability to use the other outlet such as for my LED flashlight/nightlight. #3. There is no dinner chime like on my pillar perfect pet feeder. The dinner chime is great for waking the cats up if they are sleeping upstairs or just unaware of how close to dinner time it is. #4. It’s a chunky monkey as in it takes up a huge foot print without offering more bang for my buck as far as food holding capacity. The food hopper holder claims to hold 24 cups of food and for two cats at 1/2 cup per day for dinner that could last two weeks. My Pillar perfect pet feeder holds close to 12-16lbs of food and has an automatic low food chime. #5. I should have realized that everything was going to be made out of plastic. I was disappointed to see the food hopper was plastic. At least the bowl isn’t plastic. The good news: #1. Customer support was awesome at helping me troubleshoot the large phone text sizing issue. I couldn’t get passed the initial startup page in the app until we figured out that my text size was set too large for their app to be able to compensate. #2. I really like the idea of being able to control the feeding amounts from my phone. This ability paired with my Arlo cameras will hopefully help reduce over feeding if one of the cats doesn’t show up for dinner when we aren’t home. #3. I plan to use a 3D printed food divider to be able to feed two cats from one feeder!

So far, great, better than the older version

The old version of the petsafe feeder lasted us abput 7-8 years before the motor gave out and we have their water fountains, it's a solid brand. We were deciding between getting another old model or spending more for the newer version which we ultimately decided on taking the chance that more tech meant more problems. So far its been great.with no issues. It's internet connected so the clock is always up to date. The other model would slowly lose time requiring clock resets every few months. It notifies us of feedings, errors and food levels. The app makes programming it super easy and we can change it on the fly if the vet recommends a change. Older version is a lot of button clicks. The splitter for our two cats works perfectly. Its nicer and more solidly built than the older one and the lid latched better so the cats can't pry it off. All in all a win. Will update long term if the more tech heavy model ends up being more trouble than the good old "dumb" but amazingly sturdy over time version.

    Overall I'm happy with it.

It has a pretty good app to control it. You can set up and easily change schedules or you can do an impromptu feeding with the app or with the button on top. It has battery backup in case the power is out but it requires 4 D batteries. We use it to feed feral outside cats that are wild but keep the mice away. We have raccoons and other critters so I built a box for the feeder to protect it from them. It's under a porch so it doesn't get wet but it has lasted and performed well even in extreme heat and cold. So it's pretty durable. My only complaint is that it's not easy to clean and if you attempt to remove the hopper food goes everywhere unless it's empty.

Easy for Kitty Parents with Busy Schedules or Feeding Requirements

My senior boy was just diagnosed with diabetes, and I needed a portion controlled way to feed dry food to my other two cats. This feeder has been a lifesaver! It's easy to use and the app is amazing. I'm able to control the time of day, portions, and feedings with the click of a button. The scheduling is easy, too. This is great if you travel a lot or have pets with dietary and portion requirements. The construction is sturdy, and it's super big. One of my cats is afraid of the noise as the food drops into the steel bowl, it's really loud! It took them a while to get used to it but now they all are fine feeding out of it. Would be a 5 star item except for two things: the power cord is too short, it needs to be a lot longer; and it needs to come with two bowls so you can always have one in the washer. Go ahead and order a second bowl, you'll need it.

Slow feed great: food tings loud: have patience

We have a 70 lb mutt who was eating out of the blue so fast he was making himself sick. So after finding this affordable smart automatic feeder with slow feed option we decided to take a chance. The smart app to set up feeding schedules is nice. The slow feed option is a godsend. We've not experienced any wifi signal dropping like some people have complained about. The food is kinda loud when it tings off the metal bowl during the dispensing process. We attempted to make it a little less jolting sounding by putting a pot holder under the bowl. It helps a little. With that being said. Due to the noise of the machine and the food hitting the bowl and being noisy it literally scared our big boy to death each time. So badly that we were not sure if he was ever going to warm up to it. After about 7 days of extreme praise and patience with him. Coaching and encouraging him each meal time to approach the feeder and it was ok. Wr literally had to sit with him to get him to eat from it...we gave him tons of encouragement during the transition...i think we have finally made it over the hump with him being ok with it. He still jumps off the ground on ocassion when it catches him off guard (kinda funny though...lol) but he has gotten to where he will eat from it when we are not near and he will sit and stare at it waiting for meal time...I'm not gonna lie. It took a lot longer for him to get used to it due to the noise but I think we are finally in a comfortable spot. It is very nice not having to worry about feeding time. We fill the hopper up once a week and thats it. Our big boy is set to get 1.5 cups twice a day over the slow feed option. He has not gotten sick one time since we've started using this machine for his feedings. I would totally by this again if I had to. I do recommend it. We did purchase an additional bamboo flat top elevated feeder to sit the smart feeder on so our big boy could eat at a comfortable height and not be all hunched over eating from the floor level. Additionally, I think the advertising for working with Alexa is lame. It doesn't really do anything with alexa other than you can set up the skill to give a "treat". Alexa is not capable of the skill for the feeding schedule. The app for the feeder is really all you need for the smart feature. We only use the app and have no complaints with it. It is simple to use and set up the routine feeding schedule.

    Worst feeder ever!

I’m on my second one of these, and it failed (went completely dead and will not power back on) after 13 months. The first one lasted just a little bit longer than that before it stopped working (although that one at least powered on). Performance got so bad that I had to keep my eye on a camera trained on the feeder to make sure it was working. At this price I expect a life span of more than one year. Having gone through two of these, I will never buy one again. And my poor cat went hungry for a couple of days before I figured out what was going on. Totally unacceptable. The nice reviews are accurate for as long as the unit operates correctly. But don’t expect that to last very long! Steer clear of this product if you care about your animals and aren’t home every minute to check on whether it is working! Update: I bought my second feeder after the first one stopped working because when it works properly it is a fantastic device. The problem seems to be with longevity. My first one stopped warning me when the food was low, then eventually lost internet connection and couldn’t be operated. My second one also stopped sending low food alerts after a few months, but I have a camera trained over the top of it so I could see when it was getting low. Unfortunately unlike my first one, when this latest one lost internet connection, it stopped feeding. With the battery backup, it was supposed to feed per the programmed schedule even without being connected to Wi-Fi. Then it completely lost power and could not be used at all. So my one star rating pertains to the product. The company on the other hand surprised me. I was getting so frustrated trying to find a new feeder that I finally contacted customer service by chat from their website and explained everything. Even though the warranty had expired almost a month ago, the company offered to send me a replacement. So I’ll be on round three. I know what to look for and thank goodness I have a camera to monitor things when I’m away. But it will be difficult to leave for three or four days in the event it fails again. They told me the replacement will only come with a three month warranty, so I suspect I’ll be getting a refurbished unit. So they clearly must know these products have problems. But kudos to them for not telling me to pound sand since the warranty has expired. So my customer service experience was a positive one.

Works great -- just need to teach my pups how to use it!

We have only had this feeder for a few days but so far I am very happy with it (I will update this review if my decision ever changes). As several people have noted, this feeder does not support 5Ghz networks, only 2.4Ghz, so I had to setup my mesh network to only transmit in 2.4Ghz while I set this up, but everything went smooth after that. PROS: --Setup was simple. --The hopper can hold quite a bit of food, which is something I didn't even realize I would like about this. My old automatic pet feeder had a smaller hopper and could not fit the entire bag of dog food, so I always had 1/4th of a bag of dog food that I needed to store. Not with this one -- I can fit the entire bag in the hopper. --The app that you install on your smartphone is intuitive and easy to use. It uses cups as the measurement (1/8th, 1/4th, 3/8th, etc. all the way up to 4 cups) so it is easy to tell how much food your pet will be getting, unlike my old automatic feeder that just listed the servings as 1 portion, 2 portions, etc. (you had to manually measure it to figure out how much 1 portion was). --It is compatible with Alexa (but some minor tweaks needed -- see the CONS section below) CONS (all minor so far): -I didn't like the command you have to speak to use the Alexa skill. "Alexa, ask Smart Feed to feed a snack" just didn't feel natural to me. So, to offset this, I added a routine in the Alexa app so whenever I say "Alexa, feed my dog" or "Alexa, feed <dog's name>" she interprets that as "Alexa, ask Smart Feed to feed a snack". So now I can say what feels more natural to me, and Alexa understand this and passes the right command to the device. Works great and works from any Alexa device in my house (we have 8 echo devices)! -My pups don't understand that they each have their own dish. The main reason why I purchased this auto-feeder is due to the fact that it supports a splitter and two bowls. I set this up so my dogs wouldn't have to share a bowl anymore, but they still eat from the same bowl together (see the picture). Maybe this is what they prefer or maybe it will just take time to teach them... we'll see. Overall, really pleased with this purchase so far and would recommend this to others.

    Replacement

This was a replacement purchase, on my previous one the belt broke. unfortunately you can’t just buy a belt, but the device itself is very convenient durable and helpful with keeping my dogs fed and healthy.

PetSafe Smart Feed Works Great for Me!

I had an older PetSafe automatic feeder that was not controlled through an app. The setup was all done manually from the unit and it was not user friendly at all. I upgraded to the PetSafe Smart Feed Automatic Cat and Dog Feeder and I am so glad I did. I use it for our 70 lb. dog. The app itself installed easily. I ran into a few snags with getting connected to our Internet but eventually it worked. I strongly recommend taking the unit apart as instructed and putting it back together so that you know how it operates. This is because initially, I thought the feeder did not work properly and I almost returned it. I decided to check it out fully. That's how I discovered the top lid was not exactly placed how it should be and so the error was on my part. Some people have complained that it is noisy when distributing the food. For me, the noise lets me know the unit is working. I am very happy with my purchase.

    Update at 11 months

I bought this to help with 1 of my cats compulsive eating habits. We have 3 cats & he seems to worry about food security & he is my biggest cat. It has helped, him with his binging & purging. For last 2 month I have been getting message off & on stating "there was a slight hiccup with feeding your pet". When I hit the feeded on the side and pushed the button until it turned from red to blue ot would work. It did sound a little different when dispensing. Fast forward to now and since we have still been experiencing more frequently I thought I was just going to replace it. When I started the search on Amazon & it brought up this product I purchased on July 2, 2023. It has an option to do support & took you to manufacture website for help. I did the self support option & found out how to take it apart easily & remove the crumb catcher. There were a few pieces of food in other areas of the machine that may have interfered. The crumb catcher definitely needs Cleaned. When you take the crumb catcher off the bottom of the conveyer belt assemble, move the belt and use a utensil to to get the crumbs out. You can use soap and water on the conveyer assembly, but you have to let it dry completely before reassembly. Hope this helps, we shall see if this keeps it working.
