Ease of Use and Temp Peace of Mind

I've been looking for a temperature control system for about a year and really wanted one with wifi connectivity, but didn't want to spend $400+. I have had a lot of success with my other Inkbird thermometers, so for the price, I was like why not. I would first like to say that the packaging and ability to store the unit is fantastic. A hard shell case with foam inserts will not only protect the unit but keep it organized and is appealing to the eye. It is about the size of a kid's lunch box so it does not take up much space. Every piece fit and all functions worked when I did a test run. Wifi connected and the ap was easy to use. Now that I have done my practice run, I am looking forward to throwing some meat on the smoker and letting it run while I enjoy my day. The only thing you need to be aware of is you may have to figure out how to attach it to your firebox. It only comes with two, flat, rectangular pieces to attach to your smoker. I have been looking at these type devices for a while now and there are accessories and hacks you can find online to make it work. Lots of YouTube videos as well so don't let that deter you.

    Amazing product

Overall this is a great product and at a great price point compared to other more complex units I had researched before deciding on the ISC-007BW. It has all the basics you need in a smoker controller and keeps the grill temperature solid as a rock on long cooks. It is a three probe system (one grill temp probe and two food temp probes. More than enough for my Large Green Egg. Out of the box the ISC-007BW comes in a sturdy storage case that has compartments for all components. It comes with the Smoker Controller, power plug, 3 probes, and adapter plates to fit different types of grills. . With the shimps provided it fit perfectly on my Large Green Egg. It comes with two instruction books. One is how to use the device and the other is how to pair the device with your phone using a bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection. The directions are minimal, but enough to start using the device immediately. I would recommend that you also watch the many You-Tube videos available to gain a better understanding on how to operate. Other reviews had commented on having trouble pairing but I had no problems at all. One important point is that it only works on a 2.4G network. I elected to do a practice run to see how the unit works with a grill target temperature of 225 F. I was able to get a stable 225 F in about 30 mins. My first cook was a 3.5 lb brisket point. 6 hours fat side down - 2 hours fat side up - wrapped in tin foil and had a goal of reaching an internal temperature of 185 F for at least two hours. Total cook time ended up being 11.5 hours. I let the fire get a little too hot as I was getting it going and just elected to put the meat on at 275 F grill temperature. It was able to get the temperature back down to 225 F within about 45 mins. The unit also did a great good of recovering back to the target temperature within 30 mins of opening the lid for the flips with the lid open for approximately 2 mins. I also did a 3 min timed opening of the lid at the 9 hour point to get data on recovery time. This ended up being a little bit of a bust but was a good demonstration on all the alert functions of the unit. I opened the lid for 3 mins but unfortunately when I closed the lid the daisy wheel slid open and the temperature rose to 275 F setting off the temperature alarm. I readjusted the daisy wheel and all said and done it took 90 mins for the temp to return back to target. I consider this a win because without the alert I wouldn't have caught my mistake for hours and the relatively short deviation had no effect on the final outcome. The brisket ended up turning out great and the unit operated great! The only areas I see for improvement are a few minor details with the APP. You have the ability to export the temperature probe data as a csv file. Unfortunately if you turn the unit off before exporting it is all lost. As I said before this is a great unit with all the basics you need!

    Must Have for Komodo Joe

WhenI switched to a Komodo Joe Grill from an electric smoker, maintaining a specific temperature was the most difficult task. The old electric smoker, you set it and you could forget about it. The Komodo required constant tinkering with the vents. When I saw the Inkbird, I thought is was worth a try. The Inkbird made smoking easy. Set a temperature and it maintains it for you. The Inkbird includes a carrying case that keeps everything organized. Set up was easy but the manuals provide little direction other than setting up the apk. There are some videos on the web site that give direction and are worth a watch. The video stated to leave the top vent open a sliver. That is key at getting this to maintain the temperature. After setting up and connecting the device, my grill/smoker maintained the temperature perfectly with only very small fluctuations. I smoked a poke shoulder which took 12 hours and this allowed me the flexibility to do other things while the Inkbird did the work. I was able to go on a bike ride and monitor everything from my phone. Love the apk and being able to watch everything. The apk must be synced with the device every time you power it on but doing so is easy. You can only sync with one device at a time which is the only very minor concern I could find. I stopped using my grill as a smoker because of how difficult it was to maintain the temperature and constant monitoring required. Now with the Inkbird, smoking is easy requiring little on my part. This is a must have and will make smoking easy and a joy. I can't emphasize enough how easy and demand free it makes smoking.

Tips for Akorn kamado & a USB issue

It's working pretty well on my Akorn kamado, but when I power it with just the USB port everything works but the fan. I have to use the supplied power brick to get it to work. I notice that it puts out 12v, the USB C from a battery bank (since it comes from USB A) is 5v and will not power the fan. Otherwise I'm satisfied, have used it twice so far. You want to bring your akorn up to temp and get it stabilized manually first and only turn the device on to maintain that temp or it will overshoot and an Akorn will not cool back down quickly. Some air makes it past the fan when it's off so no need to disonnect the intake hose when bringing it up to temp. This device can only raise the temp, it cannot reduce it, so set the top vent more closed than you would normally (I have to shut mine almost completely to run at 230°) so the device can fully control the temp with just the fan. I.e. so that it has to use the fan occasionally to maintain the temp, and can reduce the temp by just not running the fan. Hope that makes sense.

Does not work on a medium Green Egg.

This thing has one job to do, maintain perfect low temperature for hours. It burned through charcoal fast, and did not maintain temperature. I want to stress, this is my experience using it on a green egg.

    Works great

My old Auber controller was looking beat up so I gave this a try. It was worth the upgrade! I was able to connect it to my WiFi network easily after I found the correct app. The manual said it was “INKBIRD Pro” but that is not available. Instead I tried “INKBIRD” and it worked. Bluetooth was easy to connect but the app makes irritating notifications whenever the unit comes in and out of range. If you can connect to WiFi, just leave Bluetooth off. The vent mounts are sturdy and fit snugly into my vent. Much better than the flimsy mount that came with my old one. My first use was to simply light charcoal and make my grill as hot as possible to sear some precooked meat. Setting the fan on manual did the trick. My second use was to cook at 350 for an hour then ramp the temperature down to 275. Once I got the grill up to temperature the grill stayed within a few degrees of my target and when I lowered the target the fire was not snuffed out like what often happened with my old controller. The food thermometers seemed accurate compared to a high end thermometer at room temperature and in very hot water. I loved the temperature graph display. It allowed me to guess the time remaining to reach the target temperature. My only complaint about the graph is the Y axis shows a very wide range so the typical cold to cooked food temperature range is squished into a small portion of the page. Others have commented on the lack of mounting points. I found that sitting the unit on the floor didn’t work because the temperature probe leads are too short but setting it on the grill’s side table took too much space. So, I attached a stick on cable tie mount to it and looped a cable tie that I could hook to one of the cup hooks on my grill side table.

Control temps like you spent twice as much

I've had many, too many, temperature controllers for my Green Egg in the past 10 years. I've spent over 400 dollars on "the best" and at the end of the day, I just need a temperature controller that is easy to set and consistent in holding temps. This is it. I caught it with a 40% off coupon on the already very reasonable 200 price and was watching out the window after hitting the buy button because I felt like I stole it. This thing holds consistent temps as good as anything else you're looking to buy. Easily connect to Wifi/Bluetooth and monitor temps and make adjustments from the comfort of the A/C using the Inkbird App. Solid construction. Nothing on the unit feels cheap. The only possible downside is that I had some trouble locating replacement probes. Don't spend more money. Don't bother continuing to look for something better. This is all you need.

good accessory for Big Green Egg, but warranty service…

Great accessory for the Big Green Egg!! Does a great job golf holding the temp (hint: use this from the start of the burn for ‘low and slow’ as it is tough to bring temp down...). Wi-Fi and Bluetooth make this mobile enabled, and we coupled an external battery (1200ma) to last for many hours without needing a 120v outlet. Seems to be very high quality and a very nice cushioned case too. UPDATE Oct 22: still like it, but learned to walk the temp up to what I want (or the unit will overshoot the target temp by fanning too much). Forget about warranty support, one of the probes went bad and they are giving me the turnaround (1 question per day, video requests, etc) ☹️

    Amazing product

Upon unpacking I was excited to see this product including a big and durable carrying case for storage. Setup to the phone app was fast and flawless. Hooked up to the smoker with ease and performed phenomenally! Great product, 10/10 would recommend.

Good temp controller, iffy software and support, does not fit Akorn out of box

Bought this to replace a dead Auber PID for the Akorn. Note that the listing specifically lists "Akorn" as a compatible model. You get two metal plates to fit into your cooker, and neither of them fit the Akorn lower vent out of the box. Thanks to some video from someone on Reddit I asked about this I saw how it was supposed to work. You have to very slightly (like a few degrees) bend the metal sides on the larger plate and then you can force it into the lower vent and move the slider over it to seal. Apparently if you unscrew the slider you can force it in sideways as well. Actual temp control is quite good. I didn't get the yo-yo effect of overshooting and undershooting I had with the Auber. Note that to control low temps I also sealed up around the round top vent piece with RTV sealant, which I recommend to Akorn owners. If you open the lid and look directly into the vent from the inside, you will see daylight peeking all around the round piece where the gasket is. Seal this and you will have much better temp control with or without a fan unit. Software isn't great, though at least it doesn't constantly crash like the Auber software. The Inkbird software crashed for me whenever I tried using a Bluetooth connection, so I stopped using that. Temp changes sometimes did not take, possibly due to WiFi packet loss; it's more reliable to change temps on the unit itself and just use the app to monitor temps and listen for alarms. I don't understand why temp controllers insist on using a phone app when it's probably easier to just embed a little Apache server directly in the device and just check using a web browser, but that's what we have to work with, The probe plugs all say "BBQUBE" on the molding. If you check out the BBQube company, they make an identical temp controller along with some other pretty decent Akorn accessories, so I have a suspicion that Inkbird may be a Chinese factory brand running out of the same assembly line as the one BBQube contracted, either licensing the design or just stealing it. I contacted support through Amazon, through the Inkbird website email, and through the Inkbird Facebook page immediately asking how to fit the plate. Responses took between 3 days and over a week, and consisted of the following: (1) please contact us through a method that doesn't exist, (2) buy our other product for the Akorn even though this one says Akorn right on the sales page, (3) nothing. Don't expect any support from Inkbird on this product if you need it. I'd say this product is worth the price IF you get it on sale with a coupon and don't mind having no support and iffy software, and don't mind bending some metal if you want to fit it in an Akorn.
