Beast of a charger; perfect for topping off EcoFlow batteries for camping

This is the long-awaited solution to charging up EcoFlow power stations like the Delta 2 series or Delta Pro (with a Smart Generator Adaptor) in your truck, SUV, or car. It's DC-to-DC so no more AC inverter losses, saving you about 20% electricity. By tapping into your alternator, this new EcoFlow Alternator Charger delivers up to 800w to quickly top off your power stations. No more of that slow 100w cigarette lighter nonsense (which are prone to melting). The installation could not be easier. Tighten down the included cables onto your battery terminals, including the 125a fuse that comes in the box on one end. Then route the 5 meter cable (6 awg) to the inside of your vehicle, where you can either place the charger directly on top of your power station or mounted from a bracket screwed into a wall. With the included 1 meter XT150 cable, you can securely lock onto one end of the charger and the other end into your battery. The connection is solid and even requires a special removal tool (included in box) to push open the prongs clamping down on the connection points. The entire unit is metal and feels hefty. Surprisingly heavy. The cables and thick and beefy, so they can stand up the high amperage coming through. In the EcoFlow app, you can control how fast or slow you want to charge too, up to 800w. This is critical for those with smaller alternators. The 3-in-1 features include 1) power station charging at 800w, 2) reverse charging, so your EcoFlow battery can charge your car's 12v lead-acid battery, and 3) maintenance mode (100w) to ensure your 12v vehicle battery doesn't die (keep it always juiced up). There is a wifi dongle and a yet-to-be used ethernet port that is included as well. Presumably, those will unlock more options later, but right now, they are not functional or needed yet. Talking to the EcoFlow reps, I've also learned they are currently undergoing testing this charger with Teslas, both the old ones with 12v batteries and the new ones with 16v batteries. If those can work, it will open up a whole new world beyond ICE vehicles. Use cases for this include weekend camping trips. I can toss a Delta 2 battery in my trunk, then once it depletes at camp, I can throw it on the charger and have a fully charged Delta 2 again in just over an hour. The speed is incredible. It's really as simple as plug and play. Solid build quality. Slim profile for easy mounting. Great included cables, mounting accessories, fuse, and cable removal tool. And being a DC-to-DC charger, I can now avoid the dreaded modified sine wave issue that many vehicle's AC inverters have, which doesn't provide clean power to the EcoFlow battery, so they can't be charged that way. I can now charge directly and not worry about finding pure sine wave inverters, nor worry about the inversion losses of using an AC inverter to begin with (20% or so). So far, I've seen this product is only compatible with EcoFlow batteries that have either an XT150 port or an extra battery port that lets you use the EcoFlow Smart Generator Adaptor, which transforms the extra battery port into an XT150 port. So Delta 2, Delta 2 Max, Delta Pro, and Wave 2 batteries work. You can even directly charge the extra batteries without the main battery unit itself using this charger. Possibly, the EcoFlow Power Kit batteries are compatible too (using the Smart Generator Adaptor), though this charger is redundant to the built-in alternator charging capabiities of the EcoFlow Power Kit system already. This unit is a gamechanger for camping, off-roading, or long road trips.

REVISED REVIEW: Expect “ERROR (NOW FIXED) Communication with the power station”

*** REVIEW UPDATE AS OF 6/18/2024: I have changed my review to 5-stars because after the initial inconvenience of the ERROR you will most likely receive, EcoFlo customer support responded to me quickly and fixed the problem by pushing through the “Firmware Upgrade” needed for the ERROR to go away and now my new EcoFlo alternator charger connects to both my Delta 2 and my Delta 2 Max flawlessly. The other reason I upgraded my review to 5-stars is because this alternator charger actually works to “reverse charge” which allows me to charge my LiFePO4 house batteries which is huge. Keep up the good work EcoFlo! *** Unfortunately I trusted the positive review that HOBOTECH on YouTube gave this EcoFlo Alternator charger and I have just wasted my only day off trying to get it to work but the latest firmware apparently still throws “ERROR Communication with the power station” errors . This after connecting it to my EcoFlo Delta 2 and then I tried connecting it to my EcoFlo Delta 2 Max. Both throw the same error and EcoFlo customer support is closed on weekends! Multiple other users are complaining about the same exact problem on a Reddit thread so only solution is getting in touch with EcoFlo customer support to have them push through a new firmware update that apparently users can’t access themselves. I am extremely disappointed and sorry I risked trying out a new EcoFlo product that hasn’t been on the market very long. Booo!

Game changer to charge power stations directly from the car

I always carry a power station to power my car fridge in my SUV, mainly EcoFlow power stations, due to their ease of use and fast charging/recharging capabilities. One problem I've been trying to solve is how to recharge the power station using the SUV’s own power, either through the direct cigarette lighter connection or a car inverter plugged into the cigarette lighter. Unfortunately, I haven't had success so far, likely because the maximum output of the cigarette lighter is limited to 180W. But, EcoFlow 800W alternator has solved this problem. I'm not very tech-savvy, so this is my initial experience before installing the alternator charger in my 2013 Toyota Sequoia. The alternator, along with all the necessary cables and parts, comes in a compact box. The alternator itself is heavy due to its metal casing. The instructions for connecting the electronics are straightforward: connect the alternator charger to the car battery and the alternator to the power station using the provided cables, and the system is almost ready to go. You need to install the EcoFlow app and add the alternator charger to the app for operation. All firmware on both the charger and power station (I'm using the Delta 2) needs to be updated, or the app will not detect and communicate with each device. Once I start the engine and turn on the charging switch on the app, the alternator charger begins charging the power station smoothly at the set charging speed (up to 800W). While charging, you can hear the engine/alternator ramping up. After charging the power station for five minutes, the alternator charger has remained cool to the touch, unlike the AC-DC inverter. Currently, the alternator charger only works with the Delta 2 and Delta Pro series of power stations because it uses an XT150 cable. Hopefully, EcoFlow will release a XT60 connector so other models of Ecoflow power stations can be used with the charger. My biggest challenge right now is to find time and take the SUV to my mechanic to install this charger in my SUV.

Works great, heavier than I anticipated

Install was simple, the toughest part was routing the wires under the carpeting to an under-dash gland and getting to the battery in the engine compartment. Once the wires were routed it is just connecting the POS wire to an inline fuse and both POS and NEG wires to the battery. Since I have a DELTA Pro, I also needed to use a Smart Generator adapter (not included, luckily I had one already) to convert the XT150 cable to the DELTA Pro extra battery port. The app found the device, and once I started the car, it magically started charging my DELTA Pro at 800w, far faster than at 96w if I used the cigarette adapter.

    Very Impressed

Hello all, I just wanted to share my first impressions on the new alternator charger. Right out of the box, it is high quality and seems very durable. The main issue I had was finding a path through the firewall. After looking for hours, I finally found a grommet hidden on the front driver side. There are some bugs with the app but that should hopefully be fixed soon with updates. The only thing I need to do now is set this up in a cleaner way. Overall, I am impressed by it and glad that I am able to further expand my charging methods.
