This Auger Drill Bit set has the potential to be a useful tool for various planting tasks and offers multiple sizes and an extension for convenience. However, the metal it is made of and the extension feels really weak and wont hold up long term. If your working in a soft soil garden these will work fine but if its harder compact dirt they will break. The auger is also only spot welded to the shaft itself which will allows these to break at a expedited pace. There not bad but far from great.

This review is for Auger Drill Bit for Planting 3 Pack - with Extension - Garden Tools Spiral Hole Drill Planter for Bulb Planting, Fence Post, Umbrella Holes - 3/8'' Hex Drive Drill - Gardening, Hole Digger Yard Tools. This auger is great for drilling holes in the ground. It comes with 3 different sizes and an extension pole in case you need the added length. To attach the extension, you just slide it on and run a bolt through. I only removed a star because the bolt they give you sticks off the shaft by about 1/2". I wish they had included a short one that doesn't risk snagging something by accident.

I ordered this because I recently placed a large order of bulbs to plant in the fall. In addition, I've got scads of daffodils that I plan to dig & separate in the fall. Along with the bulb order, I ordered so tubers & roots to be planted now. They aren't planted as deeply as fall bulbs, but even so these augers have been very helpful. They just go a little way below the surface, but I ordered a lot of plants - daylilies, bleeding heat, astilbe, hosts & coral bells. This made the planting job go fast & easy. I got done in a 1/3 of the time it would have taken otherwise. I used the shorter auger for planting these, but the set comes with three different sizes & an extension for digging deep holes. The description says that it can also be used for installing fence posts. I don't expect to use it for that, but it probably would do a good job with installing thinner metal posts. I don't think it would easily handle holes for large wooden posts as easily. It's priced at about $20, which I believe is pretty reasonable. I bought one in the past when I first planted our daffodil bulbs 8 years ago. It broke before I finished. This seems to be constructed of strong metal so I'm hoping it won't have a problem with digging deep holes. If it does, I'll come back & update this review. It did well for planting tubers, roots & rhizomes, so I'm expecting it to work well for bulbs.

I used the 3" auger with the extension and abused it heavily, digging a 20"x20"x48" hole for a basketball hoop. The auger held up to substantial use with a heavy-duty mixing drill. I almost broke my wrist a couple times when hitting a tree root, but the auger was no worse for the wear. When I first assembled it, I was afraid that the extension connection point was going to give out on me during the project, but it held up just fine and did not strip or loosen up otherwise. Very happy with this auger kit! Saved me a lot of shoveling, as this broke the dirt up and made it easy to scoop out.
- David2024-06-20This will be very useful with my hammer drill.
We have rocky soil with some clay, and I've had difficulty with electrically powered augers before. I would still use my two-man gasoline powered auger for big or deep holes. Still I opted for this set for two reasons. First, it's a lot for the money. Three augers, and an extension. I might be able to go deep in some parts of my lawn without hitting a rock. The drill won't provide power to move out a lot of stones, but I can try some test holes until I get lucky. Second, I now have a hammer drill. (Not rotary hammer, but the small fast hammer.) This is good at shaking up obstructions, be they putting screws into glueboard, putting anchors into concrete, or drilling through tight soil. It just loosens obstructions and things go in that otherwise would not. It works really well at the low speed high torque setting, perfect for this application.
