Well built! Durable Step Drill Bit!

Well built! Durable Step Drill Bit! This 1/4" to 2-3/8" step drill bit is outstanding! It's perfect for drilling into metal sheets, aluminum, plastic, and wood. The 12 sizes and spiral grooved design make it versatile and efficient for heavy-duty projects. The bit is durable and provides clean, precise holes with ease. Highly recommended for anyone needing a reliable step drill bit for various materials!

A beast of a stepper drill - drill press or two-handed with beefy 1/2" only!

Sometimes tools are amazing - when you think that this "little" blob of steel can cut a clean 2" hole in another piece of steel... Gosh I love tools! What's also amazing is if you bought this same bit from a brand like Greenlee it would cost something like $80!! So the fact that you can buy a tool of this competency for the price this is offered is great. Now into the use stuff: if you have a drill press then you're fine. carry on. But if you're thinking of using something this beefy in a handheld drill, make sure of a couple things. First you'll want a 1/2" chuck, so that little 12V cordless won't handle this. Secondly, assuming you have the right drill, make sure you handle it properly - the work MUST be clamped down, and ideally you'll want two hands on the drill (better still if you have a two-handled drill). You definitely don't want this torqueing away from you when you've got sharp metal in play. Oh, and PS: please wear safety glasses! This is a very nice bit and it comes in a useful storage case to boot! All for a very reasonable price.

makes big holes in thin material

First of all, step bits are designed to be used on thin material. The maximum thickness for this bit is listed by the vendor as 2.5 mm (1/10 inch). I experimented on a few test cases to see how well it works. I tried it on the bottom of a tuna can, and it worked great even for 2” holes. I tried it on some 3 mm PVC (which slightly exceeds the 2.5 mm thickness limit) and it worked pretty well, even for large holes. I had the most trouble drilling a hole in 1 mm galvanized steel sheet. The vendor claims it works for steel, but I thought the drilling went very slowly, probably due to the hardness of the material. I’m taking a star off because of this test. It’s not a big deal for me because most of my projects needing a step bit involve softer material such as aluminum or plastic. As an experiment, I tried to drill through some ½” plywood, which greatly exceeds the 2.5 mm thickness limit. As expected, I got lots of smoke and not much of a hole. But this was not a fault of the bit. I tried the bit using my hand drill, but it worked well only when drilling very thin or soft material. Because the bit sizes are so large (up to 2") you really need to lean into the drill to make any progress. I had better luck using my drill press, which can apply a lot of leverage without much effort. For example, the 3 mm PVC was difficult to drill by hand but reasonably easy using the drill press. Overall, this seems like a pretty good product and will work for you if you don't try to drill something too thick or too hard. Keep in mind that the difference between step sizes is large so patience is required for bigger holes and a drill press definitely helps.

Cleanest large holes you can get in plastic!

I need to drill 1 5/8" holes in plastic utility boxes for use in our small manufacturing process. Using a hole saw works, but drilling into plastic with a hole saw is challenging since the teeth often lock and spin the box or simply dig ugly grooves into the plastic. This step bit is absolutely awesome for this work! It creates clean holes at every step, with a smooth even cut all the way through. The steps are wide enough apart to prevent accidentally going further than you intended. It cuts a little slowly, but I'd expect that from a bit this size, which is helpful to allow an accurate stop at the diameter you intend. My only complaint is I seem to have a hard time with the shank... you have to really tighten it to prevent fall-out. I have not had it slip at all in the cutting process, but several times it has disengaged after the cut was completed. Overall I'm extremely happy though, and now my cuts are perfect!

    Absolutely massive

This drill bit is a powerhouse - it's huge, heavy, and should be able to tackle most materials with ease. The 10 different step sizes makes it an incredibly versatile bit, and useful in most any toolbox. It's made with steel - so there shouldn't be any issues with durability long term. It's accurate, and drills with ease. If you're looking for a high quality step drill bit, this is it.

    Good for mid-range sizes...

This bit is rated from a quarter inch up to 2 3/8. For smaller sizes this bit is kind of a handful. It's very easy to lean it at an angle due it's size and that tends to cause it to catch and kick. I have a few different sets of step bits but none over 1 3/8. Most times when I need to make a hole in metal closer to 2 inch I'll use a can cutter but when that isn't practical this bit would do the job. I've done about a dozen holes in varying sizes since getting this and so far doesn't show much wear. I'm only going through electrical type metal boxes which are fairly thin though. If you were drilling stainless or thicker material I'm not sure how long the edges of this will last. This bit is kind of grabby though and will quickly jump up to the next size as you're drilling so you need to work slowly to prevent over-drilling. A bit this size is probably more suited to a drill press than a hand drill. This type of bit can be helpful with wood working when you might need to make a conical hole for a tool to rest in for example. For the price this is a great buy. I have a 4 set of Lenox step bits that don't go to nearly this big but cost more than triple. Single name brand bits can run about double what this costs. Overall it's a solid bit that if treated well (oil when using) it should stay sharp for a long time.

I've Always Wanted A Step Bit This Big!

First off, I really appreciate the fact that the bit includes a storage container. I don't like my bits sitting around loose. Second, even though I knew it was large, I was still unprepared for it's hugeness. It's a beast! It appears to be well manufactured. The steps are clearly labeled. I personally wouldn't use this to start a hole even though you could. I'd at least get a pilot hole going first. One thing to note is that you will need a minimum 1/2" chuck to run this bit. However, due to the size holes you'll be able to drill, I think that is very reasonable.

Couldn't even drill a single hole

Claims to be able to drill through stainless steel sheet, but couldn't even drill a single step in a steel door. I have a smaller step drill that goes through the steel door like butter, but it doesn't make a big enough hole. I was hopeful for this one, but needless to say, it's getting returned.

Hefty and solid product with illegible markings

I wasn't expecting this step drill bit to be solid all the way through, it must way over a pound. I appreciate how well cut it is and it does the job like a pro. If your cutting depth is 1/4" max for your required size this bit is for you. My only complaint is the markings, it looks like little care was placed on their design and execution. The printing is off-center so that much of what's printed goes off the edge of the cutting surface and what is printed in a place you can read it is small and low contrast. The end result is that using the step drill based on the diameter printed on it is nearly impossible. Not a deal breaker as I mark out my cuts before starting but something that could have easily been avoided if they had spent more care on the printing job.

Heavy duty Unibit with steps up to 2"

Nothing beats a unibit for making a hole bigger or drilling holes in J-Boxes and such. This bit is a beast and cuts quickly and makes clean cuts. Works just as a Unibit should and even cuts thicker metals 2mm or so in thickness. When drilling into harder metals make sure to use drilling oil to cut easier, keep heat down and prolong the life of the bit. Some of the size markings are a little hard to read and not having a 1.5" size is my only complaints. Otherwise a very nice bit. Hope this info helps.
